Time to send a gunboat
The people of Greencastle in Donegal were shocked to hear yesterday that the beach below the town will soon no longer be in the EU. NI Secretary of State James Brokenshire told the Commons that the UK’s formal position is still that the whole of Lough Foyle is within British territorial waters, presumably up to the high water mark on the Donegal shore. In the days of empire, of course, Lord Palmerston would have dispatched a gunboat or two to settle this sort of dispute. Come to think of it, it’s not that long ago they had one in Carlingford Lough, which they presumably also claim even like Lough Foyle there is an international border running down the middle.
