EU will respond to Article 50 in 48 hours, says Tusk
EU Council President Donald Tusk said the Commission will respond in around 48 hours when the UK formally triggers Article 50.
Speaking to a press conference in Brussels, he said: “When the UK notifies, it is our goal to react with the draft negotiation guidelines for the 27 Member States to consider. For this I think we need more or less 48 hours. Leaders will then meet, probably in April, to finalise these. But as for now we are still waiting for the UK to trigger.”
It had been expected that the start of formal negotiations would take up to two months, but if the EU circulates its guidelines to member states so quickly it may intend to begin negotiations at an earlier point.
Tusk noted that for the first time in more than ten years, the economies of all 28 member states are now growing again.
