Thinking the unthinkable

Thinking the unthinkable

It is well worth a visit to The International Institute for European Affairs website for its information ranging from the strategic – for example Brendan Halligan’s piece on “Ireland in a Europe without Britain” where he touches on thinking the unthinkable – to the very practical.  And to that end this piece by Andrew Gilmore  is required reading in terms of distilling the terminology coming to the fore.  So if you don’t know what customs union is it will tell you. It also examines the current status of the border, the format and potential implications of a hard Brexit, and looks at some possible components of a post-Brexit ‘special status’ for Northern Ireland, to mitigate damage to the region and the island of Ireland as a whole.

Well worth too looking at its events page and next week it is launching  a “special status” report which aims to provide a comprehensive update on what is known about the UK’s withdrawal, and highlight issues of concern in the negotiations. That’s next Wednesday 18 Jan at 12:45.
