Source: A quick tour of Theresa May’s speech
FTI Consulting has studied the entrails of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s speech to try to divine what they mean in a brief three page report. In retrospect it may well be found that Point 4 – relationship with Ireland – was the clearest of the lot: she promised “… a practical solution that allows the maintenance of the Common Travel Area with the Republic of Ireland”. Otherwise it looks as if the UK will seek to stay in the Erasmus Programme and the Horizon 2020 research initiative (Point 10). Point 7 was a little surprising given the plans of some on the hard free-market right of the Tory party: “Not only will the government protect the rights of workers set out in European legislation, we will build on them”. If this means she has also set her face against the plans of some to compete in global trade by making a bonfire of health, safety and environmental regulations, it can only be good for all of us.
