Source: “The only certainty is that it will be dramatically different”
The Council Journal is the journal for local government and gives an indication of what is occupying the minds of decision makers at that level. And this latest “in-depth” report shows the extent of concern about the impact of Brexit and puts some big numbers around the scale of the threat.
For example it scopes out at just under 3.4 billion euro the amount of money the EU has committed to funding for Northern Ireand and the Border Region of Ireland over the past twenty years. It says any question mark over future funding will have a devastating financial effect.
The report details the historic impact of funding across a range of sectors and highlights the potential consequences as a result of negotiations.
“The scale of this impact will depend heavily upon the outcome of the ongoing negotiations between the EU and British and Irish Governments – the implications are bleak.
“What will the future hold for Northern Ireland and the Border Region? The only certainty is that it will be dramatically different.”
The report is significant for the extent of the concerns as well as who is expressing them ten months after the referendum result and with exit negotiations triggered.
